Menu Management

The Menu’s system is located under the appearance menu.

There may be more then one menu for each website, for example some sites have a header menu, a footer menu a sidebar menu and a quick links menu, all depending on how complex the navigation needed to be. These menus are displayed as “Tabs” across the top of the page, you can switch between them by clicking the name of the menu.

Once selected, the menu is structured in tiers (displayed by a slight indent on the “child pages”), this directly relates to the structure of menus on the front end of the site, menus can have an unlimited number of tiers, though most websites are not capable of handling more then 3 levels of menu items.

Moving Menu Items

Editing is a simple case of drag and drop, you may arrange the menu in any way you wish, though keep in mind most websites will have already accounted for the maximum number of “Top Level” or main menu items, e.g. About, Contact etc. Adding more could potentially break the page layout.

When dragging menu items, moving the cursor left and right on the page will determine the items place in the hierarchy, dragging to the right makes the item a “Child” the parent item, parallel items are “Siblings” and will all be displayed under the same item.

Adding Menu Items

Adding menu Items is simple, from the first column of boxes (entitled Theme Locations, Custom Links, Pages, Categories etc) simply locate the box for type of content you wish to add, you may add effectively any content or category of content to the menu. You can search for the specific content from the Search tab in the box, though most recently created/edited content will appear in the “Most Recent” tab for ease of use.

Once you have found the content you wish to add, check the box next to the name, you may select multiple items to save time.

Once you have selected the items, press “Add to Menu” at the bottom of the box you are working in, the items will appear at the bottom of the menu by default, simply drag them into the correct position.

Editing Menu Items

On occasion you may want to change the title of menu items, so that the name in the menu is different to the page name, either to save space or provide an easier name to read.

When hovering over the menu item, press the drop-down arrow to the right hand side, this will open a pane for the item with editable information including Navigation Label and Title Attribute.

  • The Title attribute is not displayed on the front end until the link is hovered over, then it will come up as a “tooltip”. Can be used to describe with the page has to offer.
  • The Navigation label is the text that will be displayed on the front of the site in this menu item.

You can also remove items from this pane by pressing the red “Remove” button down the bottom.
